Waiting for Spring

Spring is around the corner. Different birds are showing up at our feeding station. Slowly I am getting better at classifying various birds. So far the woodpeckers are my favorite. I particularly like the vibrations they send out when pecking away at the trees. I always imagined them as big birds but to my surprise they are not bigger than a hand. Nature offers abundance of diversity and variety. I often thought that city life overwhelms the senses until we moved out here to rural Kentucky. Urbanized existence, on contrary, dulls perceptions. Here, in the country, life appears to be at standstill but there is so much going on. Everyday I discover something previously unnoticed. Whether it is a new sound produced by an animal, or a new plant attempting to spurt out; there is a lot of action.

Today, I started the preparations for our vegetable garden. I covered the paths between the rows with leaves collected on our property and picked up from town. I covered the rows with metal sheets, tarps and cardboard in order to avoid weeds from getting out of control. The covering is not pleasing to an eye but it will do for now. Soon, we will uncover the soil and plant our first garden at our new home. Who would have thought that I would find myself, sitting here, in rural Kentucky with my lovely two dogs, waiting for Charlie, my future husband, to come home from a work trip. How did I get here?
Regardless of how I ended up here, all I know is that I am content and balanced. Maybe it is just a part of maturing but I have finally reached a point in my life where things are in its right place. Problems arise, for sure, but overall, my life makes sense; it is moving along instead of existing all over the place. Love and balance became my purpose. Perhaps this is a cliche many come to embrace but it is a fulfilling one.

Silence used to scare me but now all I yearn for is the sounds of nature and an occasional bark from one of the dogs. Daffodils are in a full bloom and it is only the beginning of March. Spring is coming early this year. The temperatures are rising but it is still a bit cold after the sundown.
